On Australia Day, the Governor-General inspected the Federation Guard, then joined the Prime Minister at a citizenship and flag raising ceremony at Regatta Point in Canberra.

The Governor-General and Mr Bryce hosted a special dinner at Parliament House in Canberra to mark the 50th anniversary of the Australian of the Year Awards. Dinner guests included previous Australians of the Year, Young Australians of the Year and Australia's Local Heroes.

In Tamworth, New South Wales,the Governor-General presented singer and songwriter John Williamson with an award to mark his 40 years in the industry. A long term fan, Ms Bryce recalled Mr Williamson's original hit "Old Man Emu".

The Tamworth Country Music Festival proved irresistible this year for the Governor-General and Mr Bryce. A stroll through the crowds on Peel Street to listen to some of the Festival's hundreds of buskers was followed by a performance of the Gomeroi Dance Company.
