Lone Pine memorial and cemetery commemorates the 4,228 Australians and 708 New Zealanders who died in the Gallipoli campaign. The Governor-General was joined there by several thousand people - many of whom had camped overnight to be in place for the ceremony. She recalled how the lives of more than 4000 Turks and 2200 ANZACs were lost in an area the size of two tennis courts, with enemy front lines separated by only a couple of cricket pitches. Seven Victoria Crosses were earned in three days for acts of valour.
