Relatives Reflection Period at Fromelles (Pheasant Wood) Military Ceremony

19 July 2010

The Governor-General, Ms Quentin Bryce AC, and Mr Michael Bryce AM AE, joined the relatives of Australians who died during the worst night in Australia’s military history at Fromelles on July the 19th, 1916, following the Dedication Ceremony at the new Military Cemetery in the small French village.

During a very moving and personal event, Ms Bryce told several hundred Australians who had travelled to Fromelles that the soldiers who had been re-interred at the Cemetery after long, painstaking identification research had been “good men who had fought for their mates”.

The Governor-General and Mr Bryce joined the families to hear their stories at the grave side.
