New National Archives and Library Building in Port Vila

30 July 2010

The foundation stone of a project that will protect the records and information of the people of the Republic of Vanuatu was laid by the Governor-General, Ms Quentin Bryce AC.

As a gift from Australia on the occasion of the nation’s 30th Anniversary of Independence, Ms Bryce highlighted the importance of a new National Archives and Library Building in Port Vila.

“It is a structure that will come to symbolise and tangibly contribute to the protection of your democracy, human rights and freedom, the openness and efficiency of your government, your lifelong learning and inquiry,” Ms Bryce said.

Shipping containers currently used to store the nation’s records will be replaced by the building, which Australia will provide $3 million towards building.
