The Governor-General commemorated Turkish and New Zealand's losses at Gallipoli at the 57th Infantry regiment Cemetery and Memorial at Sari Bair, and the New Zealand Memorial at Chunuk Bair on the Gallipoli Peninsula.

26 April 2010

Turkish troops of the 57th Regiment stemmed the Anzac assault on Sari Bair on April the 25th. The site overlooks The Nek, where soldiers of the 3rd Australian Light Horse Brigade made their ill-fate bayonet attack on August the 7th, 1915.

New Zealand sent over 8,500 men to the campaign. Almost one third of them died and the Chunuk Bair Cemetery contains the remains of British, New Zealand and Gurkha dead who were buried there by Turkish soldiers after they drove the Allies from the highest point gained by New Zealand soldiers during the campaign.
