The need for Australian communities to be proactive in delaying the onset of dementia, caused commonly by Alzheimer’s disease, was raised at a lunch in NSW Parliament House, attended by the Governor-General as national patron of Alzheimer's Australia.

Ms Bryce took the opportunity to discuss issues relating to dementia - a condition that she described as symptoms of deteriorating brain function.

"Alzheimer’s Australia worked long and hard to ensure that five years ago dementia became a national health priority," Ms Bryce said.

"We were the first country in the world to achieve that, and with bipartisan support."
