One in two women and one in three men over the age of 60 will suffer a bone fracture due to osteoporosis – these were startling figures highlighted at the Garvan Institute in Sydney during the first of a series of osteoporosis seminars.

Governor-General Ms Quentin Bryce joined over two hundred people at the seminar co-hosted by the Institute and the National Council of Women in Australia.

A greater understanding of osteoporosis is needed, Ms Bryce said, which could potentially unlock mysteries surrounding the condition.

"We need to learn more about the links between bone density and risk of fracture, and why low bone density doesn’t always accurately reflect that risk," Ms Bryce said.
