George McGregor’s “explanation” (Letters 21/12) of the Australian honours system is not correct. 

An independent body, the Council for the Order of Australia and the Australian Bravery Decorations Council, consider nominations and make recommendations for awards to the Governor-General – not the Federal Government as indicated by Mr McGregor.
