more »Now that the decision has been taken by the Government to commit members of the Australian Defence Force to support a United States-led coalition to disarm Saddam Hussein. I implore all Australians, whatever their view may be about the war, to be fully supportive of the men and women of the Australian Defence Force on duty in the Middle East.
As both the Prime Minister and the Leader of the Opposition have made quite clear, the question whether our forces should be so involved is a political one which should be addressed and channelled through the normal political processes of our parliamentary democracy.
The loyal, professional and dedicated men and women of the ADF deserve and need our full support as they fulfil the requirement of their role to obey the commands given to them. Our thoughts and prayers are also with their anxious families and loved ones at this time.
I have asked the Chief of the Defence Force, General Peter Cosgrove, to convey to all the members of the ADF on duty in the Middle East my full support, good wishes and prayers for the success of their missions and their safe and early return to our country and their families and loved ones.
