Christmas Message

24 December 2004

Marlena and I extend our very best wishes to all Australians for a happy Christmas 2004.

This wonderful season is a time for sharing and celebration – and it is an opportunity for individuals, families and friends to pause and reflect. For many of us, Christmas holds deeply religious significance as we commemorate the birth of Christ and His message of optimism and hope in our complex and challenging world.

At this time Australians feel a genuine sense of connection wherever we live, despite the often vast geographical distances between our coastal and inland communities.

And it is that sense of goodwill that motivates thousands of special people who work on Christmas Day – particularly doctors, nurses, police, emergency workers and Australian Defence Force personnel, many of whom are serving their country abroad with dedication and distinction. They know that the essence of community service is not always to be found in the things done for the benefit of people they know and love, but rather on what they do for people they don’t know or may never meet.

Whether you are spending a quiet day, are working in the community, or celebrating with families and loved ones, Marlena and I wish you all a safe, happy and peaceful Christmas. We hope that 2005 proves rewarding and fulfilling.

God bless you all.
