ACT Bushfires Anniversary

18 January 2004

Those calamitous fires which razed homes, property, native bushland and pine forests one year ago are now indelibly etched into the history of the nation’s capital. As a result, during the past year Canberra has become a stronger city, a more united community. The proud people of Canberra have set an example to the nation.

We cannot forget the loss of life, the injuries or the destruction of so many homes and properties. And, we will remember the bravery and heroic acts of those who saved lives and property.

Almost immediately, the renewal process began. The rapid restoration of essential services and infrastructure set the tone as a remarkable rebuilding effort gathered momentum. That process is now well underway, energised by a potent community spirit, a determination to rebound and in many cases a profound sense of place and lifestyle.

Challenges still lie ahead, evident in the cleared landscape on our urban western rim. There are also personal challenges to be met, but the strength of character displayed by so many and the resolve to overcome has inspired us all.

Marlena and I are confident the people of Canberra will continue to embrace the renewal process to develop an environment appropriate to their future needs and in keeping with the unique character of the nation’s capital.
