Announcement of the Special Bali Honours List

17 October 2003

As Governor-General and Chancellor of the Order of Australia, I congratulate all those honoured in today’s special Bali Honours List.

They richly deserve the gratitude of the nation for their selfless actions taken under great stress, and in an uncertain environment.

As Australians, we take great pride in publicly recognising the many Australians and others who responded to those affected by the terrible tragedy in Bali on 12 October 2002.

The events that occurred in Bali were unprecedented in Australian history. Demands, far beyond anything ever experienced in recent memory, were made on the men and women who provided assistance and service to save lives, comfort the dying, reassure the injured, support distressed families and undertook the critical role of investigation to bring to trial those responsible for the bombings.

The task of deciding on awards is never easy, but especially so for action in extreme and challenging circumstances. Awards announced today seek to honour the most meritorious contributions and remarkable achievements made by individuals in the aftermath of the tragedy. I have approved these awards after independent assessment by the honours advisory bodies, the Australian Bravery Decorations Council and the Council for the Order of Australia, whose recommendations followed careful consideration and inquiry.

Many other citizens also played a role in responding to the events in Bali. They too have our thanks and appreciation for their support displayed in various capacities.

In this week of remembrance, my wife, Marlena, and I extend our deepest sympathy to all those affected by the Bali tragedy, especially those families who suffered the loss or serious injury of loved ones.
