GIPPSLAND FLOODS
29 June 2007
My wife Marlena and I have been closely following reports of the torrential rain and subsequent flooding in the East Gippsland region of Victoria.
While the rain is welcome following the devastating bushfires that ravaged many parts of Victoria last summer, I know that the floods have brought problems of their own. In particular, the damage to property and livestock is an added burden on communities that have already faced drought over recent years.
On behalf of all Australians, I extend my sympathy to those who have been affected by the floods and once again acknowledge the outstanding contribution of the various emergency service workers and others involved in supporting those in need of assistance.
Our thoughts and prayers are with the Gippsland communities.
