STATEMENT ON THE DEATH OF SIR CHARLES COURT, AK, KCMG, OBE
23 December 2007
On the passing of former WA Premier, Sir Charles Court, I extend on behalf of all Australians our deepest sympathy to Lady Court, the Court family and the friends of this truly great Australian.
Amongst his many achievements, Sir Charles had a distinguished military career during World War II. Later he was appointed Honorary Colonel of the University of Western Australia Regiment and Honorary Colonel of the Special Air Service Regiment.
Sir Charles was a wonderful guide and mentor to me during my early Army career when he was Premier of his state.
As Minister for Industrial Development and the North West; Leader of the Opposition; and Premier from 1974 to 1982, his political leadership contributed to dramatic and positive change. He fervently believed that the development of industries, with attendant strong population bases, particularly in Northern Australia, was essential for the long term good of the nation, both in terms of economic stability and defence. A testament to his vision is the major contribution that Western Australia now makes to the Australian economy.
Sir Charles was a loving husband and father; a genuine statesman, passionately concerned with creating a better and safer future for the citizens of Western Australia and our country.
Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends at this sad time.
