NEW SOUTH WALES AND QUEENSLAND FLOODS

11 January 2008

My wife Marlena and I have been closely following reports of the torrential rain and subsequent flooding in northern New South Wales and south-east Queensland.

We have been saddened to learn of the loss of life and extensive damage caused to property and appreciate that the road to recovery will be long and arduous for all concerned.

While these major floods have occurred, we should remember that much of the rest of the country remains in a long term drought. Everyone affected by the consequences of Australia’s unpredictable weather needs our support.

On behalf of all Australians, Marlena and I extend our sympathy to those who have been affected by the floods and acknowledge the outstanding contribution of the various emergency service workers and volunteers supporting those in need of assistance.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the New South Wales and Queensland communities at this difficult time.
