MEDIA ADVISORY: GOVERNOR-GENERAL TO VISIT AUSTRALIA'S ANTARCTIC TERRITORY
17 January 2008
His Excellency Major General Michael Jeffery will be the first Governor-General of Australia to set foot in Antarctica when he travels there next week on the recently opened intercontinental air service from Hobart to the Wilkins Runway near Casey. The flight is scheduled for Tuesday 22 January, weather permitting.
The visit is in recognition of the importance of the Australian Antarctic Territory to our nation and our heritage and scientific endeavour particularly in relation to our knowledge about climate change. Significantly, the 7th of February will mark the 75th anniversary of the declaration of the Australian Antarctic Territory which accounts for 42 per cent of Antarctica.
Discovered and mapped by Douglas Mawson during his 1911-14 and 1929-31 expeditions, the territory, some 6.5 million square kilometres, was transferred from Great Britain to Australian control in 1933.
Whilst in Antarctica General Jeffery will:
• Officially open the new Wilkins Runway
• Receive briefings on the work of Australian scientists
• Attend a traditional BBQ on the ice to celebrate the upcoming Australia Day holiday
• Thank the scientists and other personnel for the important work they do on behalf of the nation.
The flight will also carry scientific personnel and equipment and supplies for Casey Station.
