MEDIA ADVISORY: BAD WEATHER DELAYS GOVERNOR-GENERAL'S VISIT TO AUSTRALIA'S ANTARCTIC TERRITORY
22 January 2008
The scheduled visit by His Excellency Major General Michael Jeffery to the Antarctic has been delayed due to bad weather in the region. The flight was scheduled to depart in the early hours of this morning. Weather conditions are being monitored and it is hoped that the flight will still go ahead some time over the next 24 hours.
General Jeffery will be the first Governor-General of Australia to set foot in Antarctica when he travels there on the recently opened intercontinental air service from Hobart to the Wilkins Runway near Casey.
The visit is in recognition of the importance of the Australian Antarctic Territory to our nation and our heritage and scientific endeavour particularly in relation to our knowledge about climate change. Significantly, the 7th of February will mark the 75th anniversary of the declaration of the Australian Antarctic Territory which accounts for 42 per cent of Antarctica.
Whilst in Antarctica General Jeffery will:
• Officially open the new Wilkins Runway
• Receive briefings on the work of Australian scientists
• Attend a traditional BBQ on the ice to celebrate the upcoming Australia Day holiday
• Thank the scientists and other personnel for the important work they do on behalf of the nation.
The flight will also carry scientific personnel and equipment and supplies for Casey Station.
