SAFE DRIVING THIS EASTER

18 March 2008

STATEMENT BY
HIS EXCELLENCY MAJOR GENERAL MICHAEL JEFFERY
GOVERNOR-GENERAL OF THE COMMONWEALTH OF AUSTRALIA

The Easter Holiday period sees many families taking the opportunity to visit family and friends or taking a short break away from home.

Tragically, we also see and hear reports about the mounting holiday road toll over this period.

Each year road safety authorities implore drivers to be aware of the dangers of alcohol, speed and fatigue. It would appear also that many vehicle occupants are still failing to wear seatbelts, or suitable child restraints, and this contributes to the severity of injuries in the event of a crash.

I urge all road users to take extra care during this Easter period: to plan your journey and to avoid travelling long distances after a full day’s work; if you plan to drive, plan not to drink alcohol; and please don’t speed – you put not only your own life at risk but that of your passengers and other road users.

Let’s play our part in reducing road crashes. We can all make a difference.

Marlena and I wish you all a safe and holy Easter break.
