On behalf of the Australian Government and people, I would like to express my deepest condolences to you and the Chinese people following the tragic earthquake in Sichuan Province on 12 May 2008. My wife Marlena and I extend our sympathies to the families and friends of the victims, and our wish for a speedy recovery to those injured.

I understand that many lives have been lost and there is extensive damage in Chengdu City and surrounding areas. I understand that your Government has responded efficiently to the disaster and trust that your continued efforts to limit suffering and the recovery and rebuilding of affected areas will be successful.

Australians are deeply affected by the tragic events in Sichuan. Reflecting this, our Government stands ready to assist in any way we can.

My thoughts are with you and the Chinese people at this difficult time.
