A MESSAGE

My wife Marlena and I have been closely following reports of the suffering and devastation caused by Cyclone Nargis.

We have been saddened to learn of the loss of life, displacement from homes and extensive damage caused to property. We appreciate that the road to recovery will be long and arduous for all concerned.

On behalf of all Australians, Marlena and I extend our sympathy to the people of Burma. The Australian Government has announced it will give $25 million in immediate humanitarian assistance to the Burmese people. On 13 May, an ADF airlift delivered much needed humanitarian supplies to Rangoon. Australia stands ready to assist at this desperate time of need and I hope that through this assistance, we can alleviate the suffering caused by the cyclone.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the people of Burma at this difficult time.
