Midwinter Celebrations in Antarctica
on 21 June 2008

Marlena and I send our warmest regards to everyone taking part in Midwinter Celebrations in Antarctica.

We were disappointed that the vagaries of the weather prevented us from visiting you earlier this year. However, we gained a new appreciation of the challenges and joys of life in Antarctica from our discussions with personnel at the base in Hobart and in speaking directly with expeditioners to launch the Wilkins runway.

Every Australian recognises that our nation’s impressive record in Antarctica flows from the hard work of expeditioners and support personnel over the 75 years since the proclamation of the Australian Antarctic Territory.

It was my great pleasure to recognise this contribution in front of a national audience by displaying and referring to an ice core from Australia’s Antarctic Territory during my recent speech at the opening session of the Prime Minister’s 2020 Summit.

Furthermore, this is the 20th anniversary year of the Australian Antarctic Medal, an honour which I have had the privilege of awarding to five individuals during my term for outstanding service in scientific research, exploration, or in support of an Australian Antarctic Expedition.

The winter solstice marks a special time for everyone in Antarctica and those back home supporting them. As you celebrate this turning point in the long winter, rest assured that many people in Australia are thinking of you and the wonderful work you do on our behalf, to research and protect the unique and fragile environment of Australia’s Antarctic Territory.

Marlena and I wish you a memorable and enjoyable celebration of Mid Winter Day.

Well done to you all.
