GOVERNOR-GENERAL A BIG HIT ON THE INTERNET

3 July 2008

The Government House website at www.gg.gov.au received just under a million hits during the month of June: a monthly record since the redevelopment of the site around 18 months ago.

Communications Manager, Dr Stephen Jiggins, said traffic to the site had increased significantly over the last 18 months.

“We are now averaging over 700,000 hits per month,” Dr Jiggins said.

“On days where there are significant events involving the Governor-General hits go up dramatically. For example, we received over 100,000 hits on Australia Day, the Queen’s Birthday honours, and the announcement of the Governor-General Designate to succeed General Jeffery.

“These data indicate a wider level of interest in the role than some media commentary suggests.

“The most frequented sections of the site are the Vice Regal Notices that deal with the daily program of Their Excellencies; the section on the role of the Governor-General; and the photo gallery showing Their Excellencies at various functions and events,” Dr Jiggins said.

The site also has the 900 or so speeches given by General Jeffery since he was sworn in as Australia’s 24th Governor-General on 11 August 2003.
