Media Alert: Governor-General presents Indigenous Student Teacher Scholarships

6 August 2010

Twelve Indigenous university students (from each state and territory in Australia) will be presented with scholarship awards by the Governor-General, Ms Quentin Bryce AC, at Government House on Monday, August 9, which is also the International Day of Indigenous Peoples.

It is the first year that the Governor-General’s Indigenous Student Teacher Scholarships have been awarded.

The successful students aim to become high-quality teachers and role models for other Indigenous students across the nation, including in remote and rural communities.

Each scholarship is valued at $25,000 per year, for up to four years, to assist with study costs. The scholarship also complements existing teacher education support initiatives for Indigenous students, which are provided by the Commonwealth, states and territories.

Media are welcome to cover the event on a PICFAC basis and should register their interest by 5pm, Friday, August 6. For more information and scholarship recipient contact details, please contact Sam Groves on 0433 505 930 or sam.groves@gg.gov.au.
