more »At the request of the Prime Minister, the Hon Julia Gillard MP, the Governor-General, Ms Quentin Bryce AC, will travel to Zurich, Switzerland to lead Australia’s delegation in its formal bid presentation to host the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
The Governor-General will travel to Switzerland on November the 30th, and is expected to meet FIFA representatives, prior to Australia’s presentation on December the 1st.
Ms Bryce will be joined by the Chairman of Football Federation Australia, Mr Frank Lowy AC and the CEO of FFA, Mr Ben Buckley, in supporting Australia’s bid during the 30 minute presentation to the FIFA Executive Committee.
The Governor-General will join the Australian delegation on December the 2nd to hear the Committee’s decision.
Australia is competing against the Republic of Korea, Qatar, the United States and Japan for the rights to hold the World Cup in 2022.
The program on December the 1st and 2nd will also see the announcement of the winner of the bid for the 2018 World Cup.
As a result of these arrangements, the Governor-General has cancelled her involvement in an event in Sydney on the evening of November the 30th, in order to meet the World Cup commitments.
