STATEMENT BY THE GOVERNOR-GENERAL - BALI BOMBINGS 2005

I am appalled by the most recent attacks on innocent people in Bali.

Those responsible are to be condemned for their senseless, cruel and inhumane actions.

I know I speak for all Australians when I say that we stand with the government and people of Indonesia in their time of need, just as we did following the terrorist attacks just 3 years ago in Bali, and in the aftermath of the tsunami.

To His Excellency President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, you and your government and the people of Indonesia are very much in our thoughts.

To the families of those killed, wherever you come from - Indonesia, Australia or from other countries – we extend our heartfelt sympathies. Our prayers are with you.

To those injured, we wish you a speedy recovery.

To those helping in so many ways, our sincere thanks for all you are doing. You remind us that there is still so much good in human nature that we should give thanks for and encourage, despite the misguided actions of others.
