STATEMENT BY THE GOVERNOR-GENERAL - CONDOLENCE MESSAGE TO IRAQ - TIGRIS RIVER BRIDGE DISASTER

Your Excellency

All Australians are horrified by the loss of life and injuries sustained in the panic and rush for safety on the bridge across the Tigris River.

That such tragedy should befall innocent people attending a religious festival is truly appalling.

My wife and I join all Australians in extending our deepest sympathy and heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims and our best wishes to the injured for a rapid recovery.

Our thoughts and prayers are with you, the government, and the people of Iraq at this sad time.
