more »Over the next three days the Governor-General will visit the north of Tasmania. This will be Sir William's first visit as Governor-General to the north-west coast cities of Devonport and Burnie.
On Wednesday 10th March 1999, his visit will begin in Launceston where he will be the guest speaker at the Gala Dinner to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the Launceston Chamber of Commerce which is Australia's oldest, continuously operating, Chamber of Commerce.
On Thursday 11th March, the Governor-General will visit the City of Devonport. In the morning, Sir William will meet local youth at the Loading Zone Youth Centre; visit clients at Devon Industries Tasmania, which provide training and supported employment for people with disabilities, and officially name the Occupational Training and Support Services of Devonfield Enterprises The Wright Centre. Sir William will also meet representatives of the local Aboriginal community at Tiagarra, the Tasmanian Aboriginal Interpretive Centre; and meet residents at the Orana Respite Centre. In the afternoon, Sir William will attend a Luncheon hosted by the Deputy Mayor; join members of the Devonport 60 and over Club at afternoon tea; inspect the Australian Weaving Mills and then the Tascot Templeton Carpet factory. In the evening, Sir William will attend a Civic Reception at the Council Chambers to be hosted by Alderman the Honourable Geoff Squibb, MLC, Mayor of the City of Devonport.
On Friday 12th March, the Governor-General will visit the City of Burnie. In the morning, Sir William will visit Summit Industries, a sheltered workshop, and officially launch their new product range. As a guest of the Anglican Bishop of Tasmania, the Right Reverend P. K. Newall, Sir William will attend a morning tea with residents and volunteers at Umina Park Nursing Home. He will later inspect the Cheese Tasting Centre at Lactos Pty Ltd. In the afternoon, Sir William will attend a luncheon hosted by the Mayor at the Pioneer Village Museum; visit clients and youth workers at the No.13 Youth Development and Recreation Centre, and present Certificates of Membership to the 1999 Youth Making Changes Around Burnie (YMCAB) Youth Council. Sir William will also tour the facilities at Caterpillar Elphinstone; meet with residents, volunteers and staff at "Oakleigh House", a Salvation Army Centre. In the evening Sir William will attend a Civic Reception to be held in his honour at the Burnie Regional Art Gallery to be hosted by Alderman Steven Kons, Mayor of the City of Burnie.
