On Wednesday, 31 January 2001, at Government House, Canberra, the Governor-General, Sir William Deane, received from His Excellency Mr Khizar Hayat Khan Niazi, Letters of Commission accrediting him as High Commissioner for The Islamic Republic of Pakistan. The High Commissioner was accompanied by Mr Sohail Amin (Counsellor); and Mr Syed Ibne Abbas (Counsellor) High Commission for Pakistan. The Governor-General and Lady Deane also received Mrs Adeeba Niazi and Mr Mohammad Ali Khan Niazi.

On Sunday, 28 January 2001, at Corowa, New South Wales, the Governor-General, Sir William Deane, and Lady Deane, as official guests of the Corowa Federation Festival, attended the Grand Parade, and later a Civic Ceremony at which Sir William delivered an address and Lady Deane presented awards for the best Parade floats.
