On Wednesday 29 December 2004, the Governor-General His Excellency Major General Michael Jeffery, AC, CVO, MC, sent messages of condolence and sympathy on behalf of the People of Australia to the following Heads of State of those countries tragically affected as a result of the tsunamis which struck the region on the 26 December 2004: the President of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh, H E Professor Dr Iajuddin Ahmed; the President of The Republic of India, H E Dr A.P.J. Abdul Kalam; the President of the Republic of Indonesia, H E Dr Bambang Susilo Yudhoyono; The King of Malaysia, His Majesty The Yang Di-Pertuan Agong Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin Ibni Al-Marhum Tuanku Syed Putra Jamalullail; the President of the Republic of Maldives, H E Mr Maumoon Abdul Gayoom; the President of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka, H E Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga; and the King of The Kingdom of Thailand, His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej.

On Tuesday, 14 December 2004, at the Royal Military College of Australia, Duntroon, ACT, Their Excellencies, the Governor-General Major General Michael Jeffery, AC, CVO, MC, and Mrs Marlena Jeffery attended the 2004 General Service Officers’ Graduation Parade, at which the Governor-General, as Commander-in-Chief, reviewed the parade and presented the Sword of Honour and The Queen’s Medal, followed by Commissions and Graduate Certificates to Staff Cadets.

On Friday, 10 December 2004, the Governor-General His Excellency Major General Michael Jeffery, AC, CVO, MC, departed Australia to visit Australian personnel deployed to Solomon Islands and East Timor as part of Australia's ongoing assistance to both countries to ensure the ongoing stability of the region. The Governor-General also met government leaders of the two countries.
