Ladies and gentlemen, I am really thrilled to welcome you to Government House this evening for the induction of six outstanding Australians to our country’s Export Hero ‘hall of fame’.

They will join 82 others recognised over the last 13 years for:

their remarkable personal achievements,

and their significant contribution to Australia’s economy and our reputation as an international trading partner.

I especially like the word ‘hero’ because it evokes so many marvellous qualities that inspire us:

to stretch ourselves,

to open our minds to possibilities beyond the concrete and present

and to use our talents and skills in ways that will reward us not only as individuals but as citizens of a nation and world.

And in this context, we are reminded that heroes can emerge from vastly different and surprising places – far from the sporting field – though very often your jerseys bear the same colours.
Intellect and intelligence

vision and creativity

courage

tenacity

an assiduous work ethic

self belief

resilience through setback and disappointment

and a spirited enthusiasm for your undertaking.

You are masterful relationship builders too because you understand the profound value of people and partnerships to the enduring success of your enterprise.

This is critical of course in any organisation, but in your businesses the human demands across borders are so much greater and more complex.

You must have a curiosity for how diverse people and societies tick, and a capacity to draw on and unite their strengths and common aspirations.

You must develop a keen eye and ear for cultural and linguistic nuance, and a meticulous attention to detail.

You must know when interests and values coalesce, and when they can best thrive together.

And you must be leaders.

As you are.

Leaders:

of your companies

your staff

your industries and fields of expertise

and your communities of influence.

You are leading Australians.

In this role, I meet so many Australians doing extraordinary things.

Very often their efforts go unrecognised, though they never seek recognition themselves.

I commend the Australian Institute of Export and sponsors for promoting this forum through which Australians

are encouraged to look out for export industry excellence

and to bring it to the table to receive the distinction it deserves.

Ladies and gentlemen, it has been my great privilege and pleasure to induct the 2009/2010 Australian Export Heroes this evening.

On behalf of all Australians, I wish you every success, and thank you for the example and inspiration you offer us.
