On Thursday 28 December 2023, Their Excellencies General the Honourable David Hurley AC DSC (Retd) and Mrs Linda Hurley travelled from Canberra, Australian Capital Territory, to Cairns, Queensland.
Afterwards, the Governor-General and Mrs Hurley, as guests of Councillor Terry James, Mayor, Cairns Regional Council, received a briefing on the progress of recovery operations following ex-Tropical Cyclone Jasper.
Later, the Governor-General and Mrs Hurley met with flood-affected Holloways Beach residents, Mr Neil Springfield and Mr Lindsay Springfield, and volunteer members of the Cairns Clean-Up Crew.
Then, the Governor-General and Mrs Hurley, as guests of Mr Wayne Coutts ESM, Regional Director, Queensland SES, met with volunteer SES and RFS members.
Afterwards, the Governor-General and Mrs Hurley, as guests of Ms Kezia Vonarx, Senior Community Recovery Officer, Department of Communities, Housing and Digital Economy, visited the Holloways Beach Community Recovery Pop-Up Hub, where they met with service agency representatives, volunteers and flood-affected residents.
In the afternoon, the Governor-General and Mrs Hurley travelled from Cairns, Queensland, to Canberra, Australian Capital Territory.
