On Sunday the 11th of October, a National Commemorative Service held by Department of Veterans Affairs at the Australian War Memorial marked the 25th anniversary of Australian service in Afghanistan. More than 35,000 Australians served in Afghanistan and across the Middle East Area of Operations. Their service came at a profound cost, with the loss of 47 Australian lives and hundreds more wounded and dealing with trauma, chronic pain, and the distressing memories carried into ordinary life.
Speeches by the Governor General and Prime Minister honoured those who never came home and reflected on the courage, commitment and sacrifice of all those who served, paying tribute to the families who stood beside them throughout their service and beyond.
Mrs Janny Poate, mother of 23 year old Private Robert Poate who was killed in Afghanistan, spoke on behalf of veteran families saying “the families ensure we will never forget them”.
Mr Khalil Fegan DSC AM, Repatriation Commissioner, said today is a time for the nation to acknowledge Australia’s exceptional effort in Afghanistan and thank the men and women who worked alongside communities in Afghanistan to achieve so much.
The first wreath was laid by Seaman Leisa Russell and Kylie Russell, the family of Sergeant Andrew Russell, the first Australian life lost in the Afghanistan war. ‘Lest we forget. Tarin Kot. Afghanistan.’
