The Governor-General acknowledges the catastrophic flash flooding in Nepal and China

As at 20:30pm AEST, 27 August 2026.

This morning we learned news of the catastrophic flash flooding in Nepal and China.

While details of this unimaginable event are still emerging, we know it has involved the dramatic loss of life and overwhelming devastation, affecting communities in Nepal and China and people from many nations around the world.

On behalf of all Australians, our thoughts are with everyone affected by this terrible tragedy.

DFAT is aware of at least 35 Australians unaccounted for in the affected area and is working urgently to verify the welfare of these individuals and to keep their families updated.

The thoughts of all Australians are with the families awaiting news of missing loved ones and we express our sadness and deep condolences on the loss of life and livelihoods in Nepal and China. I also acknowledge the Nepalese and other diaspora communities here in Australia who are in deep shock and have our support.

DFAT encourages Australians in Nepal and China to follow updates on Smartraveller. Australians in need of consular assistance should contact DFAT’s 24-hour consular emergency centre, 1300 555 135, or +61 2 6261 3305 if calling from overseas.
