The Governor-General acknowledges the passing of former President of the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste

The Governor-General extends her deepest condolences to the Timorese people, following the passing of H.E. Dr Francisco Guterres Lú-Olo, former President of the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste.

Dr Guterres devoted his life to the service of his country. He was a leading figure in Timor-Leste’s struggle for self-determination and made a significant contribution to the building of his nation following the restoration of independence.

During his Presidency from 2017 to 2022, he provided leadership at an important moment in Timor-Leste’s national development.

He also made important contributions to Timor-Leste’s relationship with Australia, including by supporting connections between the veterans’ communities of our two countries.

His role in Timor-Leste’s national story will be remembered with deep respect by generations of Timorese people.

On behalf of all Australians, the Governor-General conveys her sincere condolences to his family and loved ones, and to the people of Timor-Leste, as they mourn the loss of a respected national leader.
