I am deeply shocked at the news of an attack on Helen Haines this afternoon. My thoughts tonight are with Helen, her family, friends and all in her community.

Helen is a highly respected member of our Federal Parliament, proudly representing her electorate of Indi and the people of north east Victoria, always with dignity and respect for others.

While we do not yet know the full details of the incident injuring Helen, I am sure all Australians would join me in sending her best wishes for a full recovery. 

Helen and I were together recently in Euroa thanking first responders in her community for their selfless work. Tonight I want to extend my thanks to all those who responded so quickly to assist Helen and her team.

Right now our focus is with Helen and her recovery. In the days ahead we will have an opportunity to reflect on the growth of incivility in our community and commit ourselves to showing care and kindness, and being respectful in all that we do.
