The Governor-General has announced three recipients of the Australian Antarctic Medal.
The Australian Antarctic Medal recognises outstanding service in scientific research, exploration, or in support of such work in connection with an Australian Antarctic expedition.
The announcement is made every year on 21 June – the midwinter solstice. Recipients, who are entitled to the post-nominal AAM, are recommended to the Governor-General by the Minister responsible for the Australian Antarctic Division, Senator the Hon. Murray Watt.
“Congratulations to all three recipients and thank you for your service to Australia’s Antarctic and Southern Ocean aspirations,” the Governor-General said.
“Your dedication while living and working in such challenging and remote conditions is remarkable. Thank you for the extraordinary work you do on our behalf, and for the sake of the planet we share.”
The Recipients are:
- Ms Jennifer Susan McGhee AAM – For outstanding contribution to Australia’s Antarctic Program, through leadership in fostering safe, inclusive and resilient station communities;
- Mr Shaun Christopher Gillies AAM – For outstanding contribution to Australia’s Antarctic program, through fostering resilient and cohesive station communities; and
- Dr Clive Reginald McMahon AAM – For outstanding contribution to Australia’s Antarctic Program, in marine mammal telemetry and ocean observing systems.
Recipients will be invited to be invested in the spring by the Government House in their respective state/territory.
