The Governor-General has announced 30 Australian Bravery Decorations to recognise the courage of 54 people.

The awards are made on the recommendation of the independent Council for the Australian Bravery Decorations.

The Governor-General said, "On National Wattle Day, I am proud to announce and congratulate the most recent recipients of Australian Bravery Decorations.

“The Australians honoured today remind us of the strength and depth of the human spirit. They were each confronted with danger and chose to act – removing others from dangerous circumstances, including beach and sea rescues, motor vehicle accidents and other treacherous and, often, unimaginable situations.

“This is the second Bravery list to be released on National Wattle Day – named in 1992 for our national floral emblem – continuing the tradition established last year to unite one of Australia’s important national days with our recognition and celebration of acts of extraordinary bravery."

Bravery nominations are considered by the independent Australian Bravery Decorations Council, which includes both community representatives and a representative from every state and territory.

“I want to acknowledge and thank those for whom an act of courage has left physical or emotional wounds that endure long after the emergency has passed,” the Governor-General said.

“Today, four Bravery Decorations are awarded posthumously, two to individuals who lost their lives performing acts of great courage.

“I offer my deepest condolences, on behalf of all Australians, to their families, friends and communities who are grieving their loss, and honouring their memory.

“To all the brave Australians we honour today, thank you for your selfless and determined courage and care for others."

The following decorations at being awarded:

• Bravery Medal: 2
• Commendation for Brave Conduct: 22
• Group Bravery Citation: 6 groups (30 people)

Nominations for Australian Bravery Decorations for people involved in the response to the Bondi terror attack are being considered and will be announced in a special honours list in coming months.
