Carol Gathercole OAM
Carol Gathercole OAM has been a swimming teacher for over 65 years and remains motivated because of the children she gets to work with.
“[My] journey began in West Wyalong, where I taught swimming with the local amateur swim club,” she says.
“From here, my late husband and I moved to Sydney to pursue his career as a swim coach, where I implemented the ‘Learn to Swim’ Programs.
“Within the last 24 years, I have made these contributions at Canberra Girls Grammar School, developing competency in swim safety.”
Carol is a founding and life member of the Australian Swimming Coaches and Teachers Association, where she was also a course presenter and coach.
For her efforts and impact, she was awarded the Medal of the Order for service to the community as a swimming teacher.
“For all these years, the same thing has kept me motivated, the children. I find that children’s ability to learn and the smiles on their faces when they realise they are happy and safe in the water is an honour,” Carol says.
She says she felt excited and honoured that the swimming community and the importance of water safety were being acknowledged through her recognition.
“I feel great pride from this recognition of service, as it reminds me about the number of children that I have taught over the years, and how it positively affects their interactions in and around the water,” she says.
“It is a further reminder that every child can be a swimmer, and that water safety is of prime importance.
“This recognition has made my work more enjoyable. My family, CGGS, staff, and all students and their families have shown me great support, and the experience has been a pure delight – and I sincerely thank [everyone involved].”
