Erika Gleeson OAM

Senior Behavioral Specialist and Disability Consultant Erika Gleeson OAM says recognition, particularly in her field, ‘amplifies what often goes unseen’.

“In fields like mine, where the work is driven by passion rather than visibility, acknowledgement helps validate the tireless efforts of so many people who dedicate themselves to others,” she says.

“It shines a light on the importance of empathy, inclusion and social responsibility – values that can transform communities.”

Erika is founder, advisor and former chief executive of Autism Swim whose mission is to reduce the disproportionate number of drownings of children on the autism spectrum amongst their peers.

She was awarded the Medal of the Order for service to the disability industry in The King’s Birthday 2025 Honours list.

Erika says she finds motivation in her work because ‘I get to help people live fuller, more connected lives’.

“I have the privilege of teaching skills that allow people to communicate, form relationships, access the community, develop skills, stay safe, express themselves – sometimes to even save their own lives,” she explains.

“Seeing someone gain confidence, independence, or simply joy through that process is the greatest motivation I could ever ask for. There’s no other career that could nourish my soul in quite the same way.”

She says her recognition is for everyone tirelessly working within the industry.

“Any spotlight that draws greater attention to the disability sector is invaluable,” she says.

“If this recognition can spark a conversation about inclusion, help someone feel seen or heard, or even inspire someone to begin a career in this field, that it will have achieved something truly worthwhile.

“My hope is that this moment reinforces the importance and dignity of the work being done across our community every day.”
