On Monday, 18 June 2007, at the commencement of an official visit to Galiwinku, Northern Territory, Their Excellencies the Governor-General Major General Michael Jeffery AC CVO MC and Mrs Marlena Jeffery attended a Traditional Welcome Ceremony (Yukulul) performed by members of the Mallarra Clan, Ngaymil Clan and Liya-Guwurrmirr Clan, and afterwards met local school children, NORFORCE soldiers, Sea Rangers and Night Patrol members.
Afterwards, the Governor-General and Mrs Jeffery as guests of the Arnhem Land Progress Association: visited the Arnhem Land Progress Association Indigenous Owned Community Store; met Galiwinku Council members and Marthakal Mala leaders at the Marthakal Workshop; and at Shepherdson College, met students and community members. In the afternoon, the Governor-General and Mrs Jeffery arrived at Gove Peninsula, as part of the official visit to the Northern Territory and visited Yirrkala Primary School; toured the Buku Larrngay Art Centre and met Yirrkala community leaders; and in the evening, attended a dinner with local community leaders, hosted by Alcan.
