OAM provides Paralympic coach with motivation to do more
For Ukrainian born Paralympic athletics coach Iryna Dvoskina OAM receiving the Medal of the Order of Australia of her contribution to the Australian community is somewhat surreal.
“I couldn't believe it. I do not think that I did something very special to receive this recognition. The reaction was just, is that me? I will be awarded Order of Australia medal? So it was quite overwhelming.”
While her humility is admirable, it is clear that the people Ms Dvoskina works with fully understand and value the impact she has had – they took the time to nominate her for recognition.
Ms Dvoskina considers that her work is not just about coaching the Paralympic athletes in their sporting endeavours. “It helps them in life. I think sport gives (them) collective confidence and strength. These athletes are not just winning medals, they become stronger, and they are advocates for disabled people.”
She said the news of the honour warmed her heart. “I am working for people, for athletes and for their families. I found out later on that the athletes nominated me. … It means I am doing something right!”
Receiving an Order of Australia honour will motivate Ms Dvoskina more, she thinks, and perhaps even others. “Not all coaches have the confidence to coach Paralympians. It’s a very specialised field. But I talk to young coaches and encourage them into working with Paralympians. Now they will see that there is acknowledgement of the importance of the work. That it’s okay!”
Ms Dvoskina believes it is important to recognise others in the community. “If people are doing something really important and are helping people, they need to be recognised.”
Iryna Dvoskina was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia in June 2022 for service to Paralympic athletes.
