Professor Elizabeth New OAM
Professor Elizabeth New OAM has had a remarkable impact as a researcher and, since 2021, as Professor of Chemistry at the University of Sydney.
“It is a huge privilege to be able to carry out scientific research: making molecules that have never been made before and using them to visualise intricate processes within cells. I also get a lot of enjoyment from being able to work with many wonderful scientists from around the world,” Professor New says.
“I think the greatest impact of my work has been in the students that I have taught, particularly my research group members who have gone on to have their own very impactful careers.”
Professor New has been awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia for her service to science as a researcher.
“It was a complete surprise – I had no idea that I had been nominated. It is a huge honour to be considered for this recognition.
“I am fortunate that my family has always encouraged me and supported me in my career.
“Recognition of my research success is really recognition of the amazing group of researchers around me: my research group, collaborators and colleagues.”
