Stephen Parker, Commended for Brave Conduct
Stephen Parker was driving with his wife and son in Barramunga, Victoria when he was waved down by two people on the side of the road.
After pulling over and exiting his car, the people told him they had been in a car accident, and the other car had tumbled down a steep embankment.
Stephen ran down the embankment, and found an electric vehicle against a tree. The cabin was full of smoke, and there was a man trapped inside.
Stephen tried to open the doors of the car, but they wouldn’t budge. He and another passer-by pulled the trapped man out of the car through the now-broken broken rear window. By this time, the car had caught on fire.
With the help of others, Stephen carried the man back up to the road. As they were carrying the man to safety, the car exploded and was engulfed in flames.
Thanks to his efforts, the man’s life was saved.
For his quick thinking in the face of danger, Stephen Parker was commended for brave conduct in the Australian Bravery Decorations Wattle Day 2025 list.
Stephen says it is an honour to be recognised at a national level.
“Helping someone who was in a perilous situation was rewarding for me, my partner Colette and our son Leo, and we left the scene that day pleased our efforts made a difference,” he says.
“To then be nominated and recognised was a surprise, but I’ve taken great pride knowing others believe my actions were worthy of nomination and I am grateful for those who put me forward.
“I also recognise that the outcomes for some others receiving decorations weren’t as positive, and as I learn of their stories, I have great respect and am humbled to be included alongside them.”
