National Year of Reading

On Monday 12 November 2012, at the National Library, Canberra, the Governor-General Ms Quentin Bryce AC CVO as guest of the Chair of the National Year of Reading Founding Partners, Ms Margaret Allen, delivered an address at a forum in recognition of the 2012 National Year of Reading.

Earlier, at Civic Square, Canberra, Mr Michael Bryce AM AE, as guest of ACT State Emergency Service Chief Officer, Mr Tony Graham, and in recognition of National State Emergency Service Week, delivered an address at the ACT State Emergency Service Breakfast.

National Year of Reading Event at the National Library

At the National Library in Canberra, the Governor-General marked the end of the National Year of Reading.

Ms Bryce was joined at the event by the Minister for the Arts, the Hon. Simon Crean MP, the Director-General of the NLA, Ms Anne-Marie Schwirtlich, representatives from State Libraries, authors and supporters of the year-long initiative that aimed to promote a reading culture in every home and set a goal for families and carers to share books with children every day.

Due to the success of the year, the initiative will continue after 2012 as ‘Love2Read’.

Remembrance Day

On Sunday 11 November 2012, at the Australian War Memorial, the Governor-General Ms Quentin Bryce AC CVO and Mr Michael Bryce AM AE, as guests of the Chair of the Council of the Australian War Memorial, Rear Admiral Ken Doolan AO RAN (Ret’d), attended the Remembrance Day Service at which the Governor-General laid a wreath.

Remembrance Day National Ceremony

The Governor-General and Mr Michael Bryce joined Australian Defence Force personnel, their families and members of the public for the Remembrance Day National Ceremony at the Australian War Memorial, Canberra.

Ms Bryce laid a wreath on the Stone of Remembrance and a sprig of wattle on the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, before joining the Chairman of the Council of the AWM, Read Admiral Ken Doolan AO RAN (Ret’d), and Prime Minister, the Hon. Julia Gillard MP, at the Roll of Honour within the Memorial.

Lunch in honour of Their Royal Highnesses The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall; Afternoon tea for Australian Defence Force Families

On Saturday 10 November 2012, at Government House, Canberra, the Governor-General, Ms Quentin Bryce AC CVO and Mr Michael Bryce AM AE, received Their Royal Highnesses The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall.

Governor-General welcomes Their Royal Highnesses to Government House

The Governor-General hosted TRH The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall at Government House during the last day of their visit to Australia.

After welcoming Their Royal Highnesses, Ms Bryce and Mr Michael Bryce presented them the gift in honour of Her Majesty The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee. The gift, a writing compendium, is made of 200 year old North Queensland Maple and showcases the finest Australian craftsmanship.

Their Royal Highnesses and Their Excellencies held discussions and the Prime Minister and Leader of the Opposition called on His Royal Highness.

Governor-General hosts lunch in honour of Her Majesty The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee

The Governor-General and Mr Michael Bryce hosted a lunch in the presence of Their Royal Highnesses in honour of Her Majesty The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.

The Governor-General spoke of Her Majesty’s six decades of dedication to duty and commitment to service that reflected the undertakings Her Majesty made in 1952 when she became Queen.

Governor-General hosts dinner in honour of Their Royal Highnesses The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall

At Admiralty House, Sydney, the Governor-General and Mr Michael Bryce hosted a dinner in honour of TRH The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall’s visit to Australia.

The dinner was attended by 20 talented young Australians who have achieved as artists, athletes, community leaders, scientists, physicians, philanthropists, entrepreneurs, media identities, primary producers and members of the Australian Defence Force.

Executive Council

On Thursday 8 November 2012, at Government House, Canberra, the Governor-General, Ms Quentin Bryce AC CVO, presided at a meeting of the Federal Executive Council.

Afterwards, the Governor-General received former students of The Women’s College, Dr Kate Makin and Ms Beverly Bryant.

Later, the Governor-General received the Chairman of the Disability Advocacy Network Australia, Mr Craig Nadler; the Deputy Chair, Ms Christina Ryan; the Chief Executive Officer, Ms Andrea Simmons; and the Executive Officer, Ms Diana Palmer.
