On Monday 20 February 2012, at the Wesleyan Church, Darwin, the Governor-General Ms Quentin Bryce AC CVO, as guest of the Northern Territory State Medical Director Organ and Tissue Donation, Professor Dianne Stephens OAM, attended a reception at which the Governor-General officially launched Northern Territory DonateLife Week 2012.

Afterwards, at the Northern Territory Working Women’s Centre, the Governor-General, as guest of the Co-ordinators of the Centre, Ms Anna Davis, and Ms Rachael Uebergang, met with staff and clients.

During her visit to Darwin, the Governor-General caught up with the activities of the NT Working Women's Centre. As Patron of the Working Women's Centres, Ms Bryce was updated on the program to counter harassment, bullying and other issues affecting women in the workplace.

In Darwin, the Governor-General launched DonateLife Week at the Wesleyan Church in the grounds of the George Brown Botanic Gardens. The Church has special significance for the families who have agreed to donate organs to save others' lives. A special service is held in the Gardens each year to commemorate the loss of family members, and to acknowledge the gift of their organs.

The Governor-General visited a new initiative for young women - the Nova Peris Girls' Academy - at St John's College in Darwin. One of the Australia's most distinguished athletes, Ms Peris established the Academy to nourish and support young women in their senior years at the College.Manyof the girls are from indigenous communities in the Northern Territory.

On Sunday 19 February 2012, at Bicentennial Park, Darwin, the Governor-General Ms Quentin Bryce AC CVO and Mr Michael Bryce AM AE, as guests of the Northern Territory President of the Australian-American Association, Mr Richard Setter, attended a service commemorating the sinking of the USS Peary, at which the Governor-General laid a wreath.

As part of the commemoration of the 70th anniversary of the bombing of Darwin, the Governor-General launched a new book - "Battling: Territorians and Their Way", by Darwin authors Peter and Sheila Forrest. The launch, at the Vault Gallery, included an exhibition of photographs from the book, as well as artefacts and memorabilia from the 1940's. Guests included members of Darwin families who were interviewed about their time during and before World War 2 came to Darwin.

Following the Commemorative Service to mark the 70th anniversary of the bombing of Darwin,the Governor-General and Mr Michael Bryce met veterans, their families and members of the Darwin community for a reception hosted by the Chief Minister of the Northern Territory, the Honourable Paul Henderson MLA. The reception's highlight was several performances by the Tiwi Strong Women's Choir.

In Darwin, the Governor-General joined around 5,000 people at a Commemorative Service to remember the 243 people who died when the Japanese bombed Darwin on February the 19th, 1942. The Prime Minister, the Hon. Julia Gillard MP, the Leader of the Opposition, the Hon. Tony Abbott MP, and the Lord Mayor of Darwin, the Right Worshipful Mr Graeme Sawyer spoke about the civilians who died on that day 70 years ago, as well as the military personnel and the 89 crew of the USS Peary.

As part of the commemoration of the 70th anniversary of the bombing of Darwin, the Governor-General and Mr Michael Bryce paid tribute to the crew of the USS Peary, which was bombed and sank in Darwin Harbour. Of the 243 people who died on February 19th, 1942, 89 of them were aboard the USS Peary. Ms Bryce was joined in commemorating the bombing by the Ambassador of the United States, His Excellency Mr Jeffrey Bleich, and the Prime Minister, the Hon. Julia Gillard MP.

On Saturday 18 February 2012, at East Point Reserve, Darwin, the Governor-General Ms Quentin Bryce AC CVO and Mr Michael Bryce AM AE, as guests of the Chief Minister of the Northern Territory, the Honourable Paul Henderson MLA, attended a ceremony at which the Governor-General and Chief Minister officially opened the Defence of Darwin Experience.
