“You can change the world through science”: Prof Tanya Monro AC
In 2022, Professor Tanya Monro AC, Australia's Chief Defence Scientist, was recognised for eminent service to scientific and technological development, to research and innovation, to tertiary education, particularly in the field of photonics, and to professional organisations.
Her passion for science, its application and the opportunities that arise drives her commitment.
"I think that you can change the world through science."
"Once you have trained as a scientist, you think in terms of data and evidence, and you can do extraordinary things because of that training in evidence-based thinking."
She recalls that she was very grateful for and humbled by the recognition through the Order of Australia, and she emphasises that her work has been done with many others in science and science leadership.
Professor Monro is an active advocate for diversity in all aspects of life, but particularly in science and research. "It's important to me to really focus on women in science because simply waiting for girls and women to come through that pipeline is not working.
"I've been focused on some of the initiatives we can create to help encourage women in the workforce, whether that's giving them support over maternity leave or re-entering the workforce in mid-career. It's important because for Australia to do the best science, we need the best minds, and we don't want them all to be the same.
Recognising the contribution of a diverse range of people in our community is vital, she says.
"I think it's critical that we recognise people that are making a difference from all walks of life, from all backgrounds …"
"I would absolutely encourage people to nominate the wonderful contributors in society for these awards. The opportunity to celebrate and recognise people who do extraordinary and selfless things is wonderful and I think encourages others to contribute."
