On Tuesday 12 February 2008, at St Christopher's Cathedral, Manuka, ACT, the Governor-General, His Excellency Major General Michael Jeffery AC CVO MC read the first lesson at the Ecumenical service of Worship to commemorate the Opening of the Forty-Second Commonwealth Parliament.

Afterwards, at Parliament House Canberra, the Governor-General officially opened the First Session of the Forty-Second Commonwealth Parliament.

On Monday 11 February 2008, at Government House, Canberra, the Governor-General, His Excellency Major General Michael Jeffery AC CVO MC, received the Australian Ambassador-designate to the Republic of the Philippines, Mr Rod Smith PSM.

Afterwards, the Governor-General hosted to luncheon the Anglican Bishop of the Diocese of Canberra and Goulburn, The Right Reverend George Browning and Mrs??Margaret Browning.

On Saturday 9 February 2008, at The Strand, Townsville, the Governor-General, His Excellency Major General Michael Jeffery AC CVO MC, as Commander-in-Chief of the Australian Defence Force, laid a wreath at the Royal Australian Regiment Association (QLD Division) 60th Anniversary Parade and Memorial Service. Afterwards, the Governor-General attended a morning tea hosted by the President, Mr Rod McLean AM, and members of the Townsville Returned and Services League.

On Friday 8 February 2008, in Emerald, Queensland, the Governor-General, His Excellency Major General Michael Jeffery AC CVO MC, as guest of the Mayor of Emerald Shire Council, Councillor Peter Maguire, visited members of the local community affected by the recent floods and thanked emergency personnel, local volunteers and support groups involved in the relief efforts.

In the evening, at Jupiters Hotel, Townsville, the Governor-General was the guest of honour at a Civic Reception hosted by the Mayor of the City of Townsville, Councillor Tony Mooney.

On Thursday 7 February 2008, at ABS House, Belconnen ACT, the Governor-General, His Excellency Major General Michael Jeffery AC CVO MC officially launched the Australian Bureau of Statistics 2008 Year Book Australia.

In the evening, at Government House, Canberra, the Governor-General, as Patron of Boy's Brigade Australia, hosted a reception and presented The Queen's Awards to members of the Canberra and District Territorial Council.
