At Government House, Canberra, the Governor-General, as Patron, and Lady Cosgrove, hosted a reception at which the Governor-General, in recognition of the 100th anniversary of the Australian Red Cross, launched Professor Melanie Oppenheimer's history of the Red Cross – 'The Power of Humanity'.

At Admiralty House, Sydney, the Governor-General welcomed United States Secretary of State, John Kerry, United States Secretary of Defense, Chuck Hagel, Australian Minister for Foreign Affairs, Julie Bishop and Australian Minister for Defence, David Johnston ahead of the Australia-United States Ministerial Consultations (AUSMIN) 2014.

On Tuesday 12 August 2014, at Admiralty House, Sydney, the Governor-General, General the Honourable Sir Peter Cosgrove AK MC (Retd), received United States Defense Secretary, the Honourable Chuck Hagel; United States Secretary of State, the Honourable John Kerry; Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade, the Honourable Julie Bishop MP; and Minister for Defence, Senator the Honourable David Johnston, before hosting a morning tea for participants of the Australia-United States Ministerial (AUSMIN) Consultations.

On Monday 11 August 2014, at Paddington Town Hall, the Governor-General, General the Honourable Sir Peter Cosgrove AK MC (Retd) and Lady Cosgrove, as guests of the President, Mr Will Mrongovius, attended the Paddington Society’s 50th Anniversary celebration dinner.

On Sunday 10 August 2014, at Sydney Town Hall, the Governor-General, General the Honourable Sir Peter Cosgrove AK MC (Retd) and Lady Cosgrove, as guests of the President of the Sydney University Graduate Choir, Mr David Herrero, attended the premiere performance of ‘An Australian War Requiem’.

On Saturday 9 August 2014, at St Mary’s Cathedral, Sydney, the Governor-General, General the Honourable Sir Peter Cosgrove AK MC (Retd), attended a funeral for the late Cardinal Edward Clancy AC, Archbishop Emeritus of Sydney.

Earlier, at Sydney International Airport, the Governor-General was represented at the transit through Australia of the President of the Republic of Kiribati, His Excellency the Honourable Anote Tong MP, by Commander Theodore Wynberg ADC RAN, Honorary Aide-de-Camp.

On Friday 8 August 2014, at Government House, Canberra, the Governor-General, General the Honourable Sir Peter Cosgrove AK MC (Retd) presided at a meeting of the Federal Executive Council.

Afterwards, at the Park Hyatt, Melbourne, the Governor-General and Lady Cosgrove, met with families and friends of the victims of Flight MH17.
