Nominate someone for the Order of Australia

Important Security Update – Multi-Factor Authentication Launching 12 June 2025

As part of our ongoing commitment to protecting your personal information, the Australian Honours and Awards Portal will implement Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) from 12 June 2025.

This change aligns with enhanced Australian Government security requirements and adds an extra layer of protection to your account. From this date, you will need to verify your identity using a phone number, either via SMS to a mobile device or a voice call to a landline. This is in addition to your username and password.

A fact sheet regarding these changes can be accessed here

Please note: The portal will be unavailable from 8:00am to 12:00pm on 12 June while MFA is being implemented.

Anyone can nominate someone to be recognised through the Order of Australia. Nominations can be submitted at any time during the year.

To nominate go to the online portal.

Before beginning you will need to gather some key information:

  • The contact details of the person you are nominating
  • A short case of why/who you are nominating; including
    • Examples of how they have demonstrated outstanding qualities
    • What they have done to make things better for others
    • The role(s) or area(s) in which they have excelled
    • The period of time, or dates of service (if known)
    • Evidence of other awards or recognition received by the nominee
  • Up to four referees (including contact details).

Process

Anyone can nominate a member of the community for an award in the Order of Australia.

Nominations are generally processed in order of receipt.

All nominations are confidential and the person being nominated should not be advised of the nomination or approached for information. The information on the nomination form is used only to assist the Council to assess the nominee.

If a nomination is unsuccessful, the nominee may be reconsidered after an interval of five years from the Council’s consideration of a previous nomination. A member of the Order of Australia may be considered for a promotion within the Order five years after the previous appointment or award.

In both instances a new nomination should be submitted.

However, if the Council deems that exceptional circumstances exist, it may consider nominations inside the periods prescribed above on a case by case basis. Exceptional circumstances may include life threatening illness of the nominee or strong evidence of significant service not covered by the earlier nomination.
