Governor-General attends meeting at United Nations Population Fund headquarters

At the United Nations Population Fund headquarters in New York, the Governor-General met the Executive Director, Dr Babatunde Osotimehin, and the Deputy-Executive Director, Ms Kate Gilmore.

The meeting focused on discussing the work of Australia and UNFPA in pursuing positive outcomes for achieving gender equality, the promotion of education and family planning, and the provision of reproductive health programs in the Pacific.

On Wednesday 10 April 2013, at Parramatta High School, the Administrator of the Government of the Commonwealth of Australia, Professor Marie Bashir AC CVO, attended the ANZAC Centenary Year Service.

Later, at the University of Sydney, the Administrator attended a Golden Graduates, Alumni and Friends Lunch in the Great Hall.

Then, at PricewaterhouseCoopers, Darling Park, the Administrator, on behalf of the Australian Women Donors’ Network, launched the publication ‘Genderwise Philanthropy - Strengthening Society by Investing in Women and Girls.’

Governor-General attends working lunch with UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordination

The Governor-General attended a working lunch with the United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordination, Ms Valerie Amos, in New York.

During the lunch, Ms Amos briefed Ms Bryce on current issues of extreme cruelty and sexual violence affecting women and children in war zones.

Governor-General meets members of the Australian community living in New York

The Governor-General and Mr Michael Bryce joined 220 representatives of the Australian community living in New York, including Mr Hugh Jackman and Mrs Deborra-Lee Furness, at an event at the Harvard Club.

During the event, Ms Bryce, as Chancellor of the Order of Australia, invested Ms Susan Talbot AM as a Member of the Order of Australia for her significant service to international relations, particularly through the arts.

Reception to introduce Australia's candidate for the UNPFII

The Governor-General introduced Australia's candidate for the United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues (UNPFII), Professor Megan Davis, to UN Ambassadors at the Ambassador's Residence, New York.

Accompanied by the Australian Indigenous delegation, Ms Bryce welcomed the formal nomination of Professor Davis for re-election to the UNPFII and commended her work as a highly valued member of the Forum.

Professor Davis was elected for the term 2011-2013 and holds the portfolios of gender and women and administration of justice.
